Celebrate Your Aging Loved One on Senior Citizens Day 2017

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day. Every year since, we have honored our aging loved ones with love and admiration, in addition to celebrating their contributions to our lives and our communities. This year should be no different! Celebrate your aging loved one on Senior Citizens Day 2017.

Senior Citizens Day

Senior Citizens Day was created as a day to support, honor, and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their achievements. President Reagan established this day, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”

On August 21st you can celebrate National Senior Citizens Day by:

  • Spending time with your aging parents, grandparents, aunts, and/or uncles
  • Spending time with older adults that are alone on this day
  • Showing your appreciation for senior citizens
  • Volunteering at a retirement community or assisted living community
  • Using #SeniorCitizensDay when posting on social media to help raise awareness
  • Promoting this important day with your friends, colleagues, and loved ones

As stated in the proclamation almost 30 years ago, “Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today, and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land.” To honor our senior citizens this holiday, spend time with them and show your love and appreciation.
